Rent - High School Edition

This will be unlike any high school musical you’ve ever seen.

This year Kāpiti College presents a senior musical tackling the complicated world of Jonathan Larson’s Rent: High School Edition. Winning both a Tony Award for Best Musical and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this high school edition does not pull any punches when dealing with the issues of poverty, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, sexuality, and facing our own mortality.

Set in 1990, Rent tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to figure out who they are and what really matters, all under the ever present shadow of AIDS. Rent is considered a ‘rock opera’, with almost the entire story being sung as it pays homage to the playwright’s inspiration - the classic opera La Boheme by Puccini.

This gritty show tackles mature themes while showcasing the amazing talent of Kapiti College’s performers. Kāpiti favourites Micayla Clough and Tama Porter are reunited as Mimi and Roger, joined by the talents of Jesse Pollard-Simmiss, Jaden Tieng, Noah Dunlop, Isla Holland, Elodie Craig, and Muri Ngawaka, in this multifaceted story.

Recommended audience age of 15+ due to mature themes.
